Charge cycles are the main factor every battery's rated for a fixed number, and once you're past that, the runtime you get from a full charge just isn't what it used to be. That part's unavoidable.
Heat does more damage than most people give it credit for. Leaving the MacBook somewhere warm, or on a surface trapping heat underneath (a blanket, a cushion, whatever), wears the battery down faster than normal use ever would.
Charging habits matter more than they seem to. Keeping it plugged in around the clock, or letting it drain to 0% often, both chip away at battery health steadily over time.
Storing it for a while without use? Don't leave it sitting at 0% during that stretch; that alone can cause damage that doesn't reverse.
