Fix: “MacBook Battery Not Charging”

If you have problems with your MacBook not charging, the first thing to do is check if you have enough power. One of the most common reasons that your MacBook battery may not be charging is that you don’t have sufficient power from the wall socket or from another adapter, which means that there isn’t getting enough juice to charge the MacBook. If this happens, you can try to use another power source to see if it charges from there instead. But if your case is different, then try out the following mentioned steps to get a solution for sure.

Step 1: Check for Faulty Adapter and broken charging cable

Before we dive into fixing your MacBook not charging issue. You should check for a faulty adapter and broken charging cable first. To do so, you need to make sure your MacBook is switched on and plugged in. If it’s running on battery power and won’t charge, it could be that there’s an issue with your adapter or cord; if it charges when plugged in but then stops once unplugged, then you likely have a problem with one of those components (or both).

Now, look at each end of your charger—is it loose?

Does it seem bent or out of shape?

If so, plugging and unplugging might eventually fix things temporarily because it pushes back whatever might be causing contact issues.

Ultimately, we recommend taking these bad adapters and cables to an Apple Store or authorized service center for replacement—not only does using worn-out parts risk causing damage further down the line by weakening your power source’s connection with your MacBook, but used accessories are also more susceptible to becoming tainted by data-stealing malware programs like keyloggers.

Step 2: Restart Your MacBook/MacBook Pro

Sometimes you can fix a MacBook battery not charging issue with a simple restart.

Step 1: Power off your computer and remove any external devices or power adapters.

Step 2: After 20 seconds, press and hold down both your On/Off button and Control key for about 15 seconds.

Step 3: Release both keys and wait 10 seconds, then press and hold down your On/Off button again for 5-10 seconds until your Apple logo appears on the screen.

Your MacBook should now be in sleep mode. After around ten minutes it will boot back up, with AC power or battery power. You can now check if you can charge your MacBook Pro without any problems.

Step 3: Reset the SMC (System Management Controller)

The System Management Controller (SMC) is a powerful chip located on the Mac logic board responsible for battery management and the status indicator lights.

Resetting it can help if you’re having issues with your Mac laptop not charging properly or at all, or if your computer won’t turn on despite being plugged in. This troubleshooting step should be performed while you have your laptop connected to power.

Your MacBook must be shut down before attempting any system reset. Do not use it while it’s off, because you may get electrocuted! Here are two easy ways to perform an SMC reset.

Method 1

The Front-Panel Reset Button: Use a needle or paperclip to press and hold the front-panel Power button for 5 seconds. After 5 seconds, release both keys and wait another 15 seconds.

Then restart your MacBook again as usual. It should start up normally now that you’ve reset its SMC values. Note that MacBook Pro Retina models have no external power button, so you’ll need to use method 2 instead.

Method 2

The NVRAM/PRAM Reset Trick: To do it, hold down Command+Option+P+R during startup for about 10 seconds. If done correctly, your computer will start up in Safe Mode after 30 seconds. You can then let go of all keys when Safe Boot appears on screen at startup chime sound.
